Garden Tidy-Up Checklist Before Summer in Perth

What to tackle before the hot Perth summer hits — and what's worth handing off.

Weed beds and edges

Spring growth is loud — every garden bed and crack in the paving fills with weeds. Pulling them out before they set seed saves hours of work later in the year. Focus on beds along fences, around letterboxes and the verge first, since they're the most visible from the street.

Hedges and pruning

Hedges grow fast in October–November. A trim before summer keeps them in shape through the dry months when growth slows. Light pruning of shrubs and overgrown plants helps airflow and reduces dry, dead material.

Edging and mulch

Crisp edges along garden beds and a fresh layer of mulch (around 50–75mm) keep moisture in, suppress weeds and make the whole garden look intentional. In Perth's summer, mulch is one of the highest-impact things you can do for the garden.

Fire-risk overgrowth

Long, dry grass along fences, accumulated leaf litter and overhanging branches near the roof are worth clearing before peak fire season. It's a small job done in spring that genuinely matters by January.

Lawn check

Aerate compacted lawn areas, top-dress thin spots and consider raising the mow height a notch through summer to help the lawn retain moisture. We'll talk you through what your specific lawn needs.
